This month's topic is concerned with fire extinguisher location in a business setting. In most low hazard type businesses (office buildings, small businesses, etc) a minimum of 2A 10B:C rated (5 lbs.) extinguishers need to be located within 75 feet of each other.

There are certain items that may need to be examined by your safety committee before extinguishers are placed. One would be the type of hazard that is located throughout the entire business. Different extinguishers may be needed in different locations. Another concern would be the accessibility to the extinguisher. Nothing should be blocking or hindering an employee's ability to gain access to an extinguisher. A third concern would be the extinguisher's proximity to exit doors. A fourth item is the annual and monthly maintenance of extinguishers by a licensed company. This needs to be performed in accordance with NFPA, OSHA and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
